Importance
Most people tell me that the main reason their health isn’t where they’d like it to be is that they have trouble staying consistent with exercise.
This is a universal problem.
But we can take steps to make it easier. I’m going to outline two habits this week that will help you stick with your exercise habit:
Do something every day
Find things you enjoy
Exercise and movement in general are crucial to good health. You don’t need to be a bodybuilder, or a runner, or even call yourself an “athlete”.
But you do need to exercise on a regular basis.
Exercising forms the foundation of our health. It’s always the first pillar I address, because I believe getting our movement right is the first step in improving our health.
Implementation
Do something every day
This is a great way to make exercise sustainable.
You don’t need to think about whether you’re going to exercise today. You know you are. And exercising every day is the quickest path to good health.
This doesn’t need to be a full workout every day. You’re still going to need rest days to let your body recover.
It’s simply moving your body in some way every day.
You might have some days where you’re going harder, say with a longer run or a weights session. Then you might have a lighter day where you go for a 30 minute walk or do a yoga session.
Just do something every day so you don’t need to decide.
Do something you enjoy
It may be surprising, but you don’t need to suffer through exercise.
If you’re not enjoying what you’re doing, find something else.
I don’t like running. So I don’t run. I like the rowing machine, so I’ll do that. Or I’ll go for a hike. Or I’ll do some HIIT on the bike or with a kettlebell.
But I enjoy strength training. So most of my exercise time is me in the gym, lifting weights.
Don’t feel like you need to do something because other people are doing it. There are so many ways to exercise. Don’t suffer through it.
Exercise should be enjoyable.
